Shocked or amazed by something unexpected.
Unlike many feelings, "surprised" can be associated with both met and unmet needs1. It means: "shocked or amazed by something unexpected". Something can surprise us in a pleasing way or a very unpleasant one. For example, in the corporate world, we can either be surprised to get a raise or be surprised to get fired. Whereas feeling disappointed or angry is never felt as a pleasant feeling.
Example: We were very surprised at the result. 2
1) If you are unfamiliar with NonViolent Communication, there is a need behind every human action. When they are met, we mostly experience pleasant feelings and when they are unmet, we mostly experience pleasant feelings.
2) In this example, without context we can’t say if they are pleased or not.
