Having lost hope.

Feeling desperate is "having lost hope". This emotion falls into the category associated with sadness. One of the closest ones would be "hopeless" the difference between them is that when we are desperate, we can take action as a last resort that prompts reckless action or violence in the face of defeat or frustration. Whereas when we are hopeless we cease to act.

Example: They are so desperate to have money, that they were prepared to rob a bank.
