To cause misunderstanding, or to make understanding difficult or impossible.
When you do not understand what is happening, or what you should do, you are probably confused. Other feelings with a close meaning are ambivalent or conflicted.
With conflicted, there is a sense of opposition that doesn’t exist with confused. When we are confused things are mixed up to make a decision. With ambivalent, we can’t make up our mind because there is a balance between two choices, to the point we sometimes don’t really care one way or another.
Example: I’m confused. Was that her husband or her son she was with?
